We already had 2 awesome posts about architecture (50 Strange Buildings of the World Part I and 50 Strange Buildings of the World Part II), but those lists were completely random - numbers didn’t mean anything.

P.S. drawbacks of this list: not all of the buildings were included in unusual-architecture.com; the voting took only 1 month.

But don’t worry my friends, this list will be definitely updated in the future.

I really hate people taking photos near the sculptures. When I was traveling around the Europe with my friends, I just couldn’t get why people think that they have to make a photo near every sculpture. Is it in our genes? Or is there some kind of magnet in those sculptures? Well ok, there might be some sculptures that I would like to have a photo standing near them… Check this awesome list of 20 strange sculptures around the world.

1. Vomiting Fountain Sculpture, London, UK

The sculptor really has a sense of humor, I see.

2. Traffic Light Tree, London, UK

What would you do if you stop by this traffic light while driving?

Designed by Pierre Vivant, “Traffic Light Tree” has 75 sets of traffic lights. The sculpture was created to mimic a tree structure and reflect the energy of the developing Canary Wharf area.

3. Fancy Cow, Düsseldorf, Germany

Is it a British police uniform? This sculpture stands in someone’s garden.

4. Skull on a man, Prague, Czech Republic

A really odd sculpture, that is said to be “inspired” by the works of Kafka.

5. Two peeing guys, Prague, Czech Republic

Sculpture by David Cerny. Let’s just cite the picture author here:
” The idea is disarmingly simple. Two bronze sculptures pee into their oddly-shaped enclosure.
While they are peeing, the two figures move realistically. An electric mechanism driven by a couple of microprocessors swivels the upper part of the body, while the penis goes up and down. The stream of water writes quotes from famous Prague residents.
Visitor can interrupt them by sending SMS message from mobile phone to a number, displayed next to the sculptures. The living statue then ‘writes’ the text of the message, before carrying on as before.”

6. Guy on a bicycle, Chile

This guy has a spyglass instead of a head, and seems to be riding to the sky, towards the stars. A nice idea, when you think of it.

7. Ballerina man, Los Angelo’s, CA, USA

If I met someone looking like that, I wouldn’t shake his hand.

8. Skeletons in love, Nong Khai, Northeast Thailand

In love even after their death, must really stand out at the cemetery.

9. Certainties on the gravitation of an Elephant, Paris, France

Quote: “At a distance of 18,000 km from the earth, the elephant Wursa could balance on her trunk.
It is on the basis of learned scientific calculations that Daniel Firman reached this conclusion, and came above all to produce this extraordinary work which confounds all our certainties regarding the gravitation of bodies.”

10. Sculpture of Pig as Chinese Monk, Phoenix, Arizona

What is common between a monk and a pig?

11. The Spider that Ate Parliament, Ontario, Canada

“Shot from this angle, it appears to be attacking the Parliament Buildings. “ Notice a little guy near the spiders leg, the sculpture is really huge.

12. Disturbing sculpture, location unknown

I don’t get it – how can anyone create such sculptures? Ugly and disturbing! What’s the purpose of having it?

13. Pig the Cyclist, Texas, USA

Two engagement rings in the ground at English Bay.

Quote from the photographer: “I’m fairly sure it’s Anthony Gormley, from the style and nature of the sculpture”

16. A Crocodile eating a Capitalist, Brooklyn, NY, USA

A crocodile eating a capitalist? I would have built such sewer covers all across the Soviet Union for the propaganda purposes!

17. Device to Root Out Evil, Vancouver, Canada

"In this illusion, the second card from the left seems to be a stronger shade of pink in the top picture. In fact they are the same colour, but the brain changes its assumption about colour due to the colour cast of the surrounding photo."

Revolving Circles

"Some observers initially see the figure as spinning clockwise and some counterclockwise. Additionally, some may see the figure suddenly spin in the opposite direction. The illusion derives from an inherent ambiguity from the lack of visual cues for depth"

It took me quite long to see her spinning in the opposite direction.

Inflation rate of more than 2,000,000%. Is 10 million bill enough for you? Or you need 100 billion Zimbabwean dollars bill? Learn yourself how that money look like.

Zimbabwe inflation rate reached outstanding 2,000,000% (even more probably) in 2008. For me it’s really hard to image such stupid thing happening to country’s economy. For such a bad Zimbabwe’s situation is responsible Robert Mugabe (president) and his government. They just keep issuing bigger and bigger bills. And I have to say, denominations got ridiculously big: the latest was Z$ 100 000 000 000. And all this happened in the last couple years. Funny things is, that the government has announced a longer-term plan to dispense with the zeroes entirely, turning $10 billion into $1. And then what? $1 to $1billion once again?

So what went so wrong?

Basically government has no clue how to rule the country. Fortune magazine writes: “If anyone is to blame for the economic crisis, it’s Mugabe himself. In 28 years he has managed to take one of the wealthiest countries in sub-Saharan Africa and ruin it in a stupefying variety of ways.”

So his first “golden” idea was to annihilated the agricultural sector by seizing commercial farms and giving them to his friends. Sadly they had no idea how to run farms and failed to use the land.

Secondly, he prosecuted a war in the Congo, spending $1 million (U.S.) a day in hopes of stealing enough land and resources from the Congolese to make a profit. Zimbabweans didn’t like that and have tried to vote him out of office, but he has punished them with violence and economic repression.

These and many other stupid decisions made many people leave the country. OK, this post is not about politics it’s about money (bills). So let’s get down to business. First take a look at this Zimbabwe inflation chart. So if you could buy a glass of beer for 10 Zimbabwean dollars back in 2006, now the same glass would cost you more then 10 000 000 Zimbabwean dollars. Alright, maybe that’s not very accurate but keep reading and you will understand.

On 1 August 2006, the new currency was introduced, with bearer cheques in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 50 cents, 1, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000 dollars. Bearer cheques of 5,000, 50,000 and 100 000 dollars were issued in March 2007. According to wikipedia it’s the third Zimbabwean dollar.

These are ‘Bearer Cheques’, so-called ‘money’ that has an expiry date. They have no watermark or little piece of silver because that would be too expensive. Yep, when you are printing brand new bills almost every month it gets expensive.

On 14 November 2007, it was reported that the RBZ was planning to issue more bearer cheques in denominations of 500,000 and 1 million Zimbabwe dollars. Bearer cheques denominated below ZWD 10,000 are to be discontinued.

January 18, 2008 the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is releasing the following bearer cheques into circulation: one million dollars, five million dollars and 10 million dollars.

This quote I find very interesting. It sounds really something. Maybe it’s because of word “millions”.

“Further to provide relief and convenience to the transacting public, daily cash withdrawals have been increased from the current Z$50 million to Z$500 million per individual. This takes effect from Friday,” Reserve Bank Governor Gono said.

On 4 April 2008, it was reported that twenty five million dollar and fifty million dollar bearer cheque was being issued. The RBZ also increased the maximum withdrawal limit for individuals to $5 billion a day.

And now the most funny / sad part of the story. With that big inflation you have to carry a lot of money. So let’s take a look on Zimbabwean streets.

In December 2007 kid receives some change… 200 000 Zimbabwean dollars is aproximatly USD 0.10

Images via: cha.lt

In February Z$ 200 000 denominations are worthless.

Images via: cha.lt

Going out? Take a separate bag for cash.

Images via: cha.lt

Just 60 million dollars for sweets and some millions for a bottle of beer…

Images via: myintrestingfiles.com

Is there a God? This must be the most popular and most often asked question of all times. Well, I can’t help you there, sorry.

This post is not about religion, it’s about architecture. Not just architecture, but unusual architecture, and to be more exact - unusual churches. I am sure that there are hundreds and thousands of beautiful churches around the world, but only very very few are so odd, that you would definitely take a camera and take a picture. If you are interested, here’s the list of 20 unusual churches that I found.

P.S. if you know or have a picture of an unusual church, send it to us (email on about page).

1. The Church of Hallgrímur, Reykjavík, Iceland

The Church of Hallgrímur is very very unusual, never seen anything like that.

This Lutheran parish church is also a very tall one, reaching 74.5 metres (244 ft) height. It is the fourth tallest architectural structure in Iceland.

It took incredibly long to build it (38 years!) Construction work began in 1945 and ended in 1986.

The Architect of this building is Guðjón Samúelssondesign.

More info: Hallgrímskirkja

This is a very famous Cathedral of Brasília designed by Oscar Niemeyer. It looks really modern but somehow childish to me. These columns, having hyperbolic section and weighing 90 t, represent two hands moving upwards to heaven.

The construction was finished in 1970.

3. Paoay Church (St. Augustine Parish) in Philippines

Paoay Church reminds me of Aztec architecture. It looks very massive and strong. The walls of the church are 1.67 meters thick and are supported by 24 carved and massive buttresses.

Its construction started in 1704 and was completed in 1894 by the Augustinian friars led by Fr. Antonio Estavillo. It is said, that Its construction primarily was intended to withstand earthquakes. And it could test the strength of the walls very soon, because the church was damaged by an earthquake in 1706 and 1927.

The design of the church is a mixture of Gothic, Oriental and Baroque influence.

4. Duomo (Milan Cathedral) in Italy

Duomo looks incredibly tall and majestic. It even has an evil and scary look in this picture. After checking the Wikipedia for more info I found there were more photos of this cathedral, but they don’t look as cool as this photo here. Maybe its just an illusion made by a good photographer that this building is so amazing.

On the other hand, Mark Twain said the following of the Duomo in Milan in his work, Innocents Abroad:
“They say that the Cathedral of Milan is second only to St. Peter’s at Rome. I cannot understand how it can be second to anything made by human hands.”

The rock cut ruins of a church by persecuted Christians.
Not sure when it was built, but definitely look very ancient. How did those guys carved the inside of these rocks?

The Cappadocia valley, where this church stands, is very popular for its rocks that the people of the villages at the heart of the Cappadocia Region carved out to form houses, churches, monasteries.

There are an estimated 150 churches and several monasteries in the canyon between the villages of Ihlara and Selime.

Those rocks are volcanic deposits, so that means they are soft rocks, making it possible to carve such structures.

6. Green church, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Don’t have info about this church, nevertheless it’s very unusual. I have never seen a church so green, have you?

Michael: “a parish church in Buenos Aires, Argentina known as the “Huerto de Olivos”, or “Garden of Olives,” most likely a reference Gethsemane, on the Mount of Olives”

7. Borgund Stave Church, Lærdal, Norway

Stave churches may have been very usual all over medieval northwestern Europe but now you can only find them in Norway. Well ok, there is one one in Sweden, but nowhere else.

Borgund stave church located in Borgund, Lærdal, Norway is the best preserved of Norway’s 28 extant stave churches. This wooden church, probably built in the end of the 12th century, has not changed structure or had a major reconstruction since the date it was built.

Interesting fact: the church is also featured as a Wonder for the Viking civilization in the video game Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings.

8. Paraportiani Church, Mykonos, Greece

I will just cite, what the author of this picture wrote about it:

“Paraportianí Church is one of the most famous architectural structures in Greece. Its name means secondary gate, because it was built on the site of one of the gates of the Medieval stone walls. Some parts of this beautiful church date from 1425 and the rest was built during the 16th and 17th centuries. ”

9. Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain

I have never seen anything as incredible as this building! Never been to Spain, but if I ever happen to do so, I will definitely include Sangrada Família on the must-see list. I wonder, how does it look in reality?

Sagrada Família is a very massive Roman Catholic basilica under construction in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Construction began in 1882 and continues to this day. A very famous architect Antoni Gaudí worked on the project for over 40 years, devoting the last 15 years of his life entirely to this endeavour.

In the center there is going to be a tower of Jesus Christ, surmounted by a giant cross; the tower’s total height will be 170 m (557,7ft).

There is so much info on this one, that you should check Wikipedia.

10. St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow, Russia

Cathedral of Saint Basil the Blessed , is a multi-tented church which stands on the Red Square in Moscow.

This church looks really cool, because It has very unusual onion domes which look playful and colorful. Sometimes people even say, that they remind them of lollypops.

The cathedral was built in 1555 -1561 by Ivan IV (a.k.a Ivan the Terrible) to celebrate the capture of the Khanate of Kazan.

A legend says that Ivan had the architect, Postnik Yakovlev, blinded to prevent him from building a more magnificent building for anyone else. In fact, Postnik Yakovlev built a number of churches after Saint Basil’s.

This church in Iceland looks really weird, like some alien structure. If you have more info on that one, let me know.

12. Basilica de Higuey, Dominican Republic

Basilica de Higuey is located in the city of Higuey, Dominican Republic. Its unusual look reminds me of a basket.

The church is one of the most respected monuments of the Dominican Republic. The basilica was inaugurated on January 21, 1971, and was built by French architects.

13. Grace Fellowship Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD, USA

(Image Credits: Derek Farr ( DetroitDerek ))

This strange building is actually a church. Once it was famous for being “Detroit’s most beautiful Chinese-American restaurant”. Later it closed down and became the Omega Baptist Church and then the Grace Fellowship Baptist Church. Located at 265 Baltimore, MD, USA.

Las Lajas Cathedral looks unusual to me because one side of it seems to be a part of a bridge across the river and the other side rests on the hill. The overall look is really fascinating.

Built in 1916 inside the canyon of the Guaitara river where, according to local legend, the Virgin Mary appeared.

You can find this church in southern Colombian Department of Nariño, municipality of Ipiales, near the border with Ecuador.

15. Jubilee Church in Rome, Italy

Jubilee Church has very distinctive curved walls which look like sails to me. Designed in 1996 by architect Richard Meier, the church has curved walls which serve the engineering purpose of minimizing thermal peak loads in the interior space.

The walls are made from a special cement, which contain titanium dioxide, so it destroys air pollution.

According to Borgarello “When the titanium dioxide absorbs ultraviolet light, it becomes powerfully reactive, breaking down pollutants that come in contact with the concrete.”

16. St Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church in Chicago, IL, USA

Maybe I’ll better don’t tell what those domes remind me (haha). Very very unusual looking building I must say. Its massiveness and gray color looks like Soviet architecture. I was amazed when I read that it was actually in USA and not somewhere In Soviet Union.

St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic church is a is most known for its ultra-modern thirteen gold domed roof symbolizing the twelve apostles and Jesus Christ as the largest center dome.

It is celebrating its 52 years, so it was built in 1956 (if my calculations are right).

Someone told that the roof of this building looks like Elvis’ hair.

Informally known as Ronchamp, the chapel of Notre Dame du Haut was completed in 1954 and is considered one of the finest examples of architecture by the late French/Swiss architect Le Corbusier.

Most interesting fact to me is that, when it rains, water pours off the slanted roof onto a fountain, creating a dramatic waterfall.

Don’t have info on that one, only this photo and the location: Huntington Beach, CA, USA.

As far as I understand it must be sponsored by Shell, because it has a huge SHELL logo on it (this statement can be absolutely different from the reality). Looks terrible overall.

19. Chapel of St. Gildas, Brittany, France

This church is really odd one, sorry I have no info on it, only the words of the picture author: “This was on the canal to Carnac. Really odd church in the (seeming) middle of nowhere. ”

Mads: “This is the chapel of St-Gildas, which sits upon the bank of the Canal du Blavet in Brittany, France. “Built like a stone barn into the base of a bare rocky cliff, this was once a holy place of the Druids. Gildas appears to have travelled widely throughout the Celtic world of Corwall, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. He arrived in Brittany in about AD 540 and is said to have preached Christianity to the people from a rough pulpit, now contained within the chapel.” (from ‘Cruising French Waterways’ by Hugh McKnight p.150)”

Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro looks like a Pyramid of Egypt or Aztecs.

It was built between 1964 and 1979. Conical in form it has internal diameter of 96 metres (315 ft) and an overall height of 75 metres (246 ft). The church has a standing-room capacity of 20,000 people.

Four rectilinear stained glass windows soar 64 metres (210 ft) from floor to ceiling.

No. 89, Seventh Avenue South, Greenwich Village, New York

Open 10am – 12am daily until October 31st.

Some time in October a quite pet shop opened in New York. And things look a bit crazy inside: McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets sip barbecue sauce, fish sticks swim in a tank, a rabbit puts on her makeup, a CCTV camera nurtures its young or chimpanzee watches monkeys in a hot moment.

The tiny space can hold no more than 20 people at a time and becomes the first exhibition of Banksy in the United States.

Here’s just a taste of what you’ll experience in Banksy’s “Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill” exhibition. I hope you enjoy his work as much as I do.

Most realistic and most wonderful 3D chalk art on the pavement by Julian Beever also known as Pavement Picasso.

They are amazing because they 1) look real 2) are completely flat but look 3 Dimensional 3) drawn only with chalk.

The author of these great drawings is a super creative person also known as Pavement Picasso whose real name is Julian Beever.

Not to reinvent the wheel I will cite Wikipedia: “Julian Beever is an English chalk artist who has been creating trompe-l’œil chalk drawings on pavement surfaces since the mid-1990s. His works are created using a projection called anamorphosis, and create the illusion of three dimensions when viewed from the correct angle.

Beever works as a freelance performance artist and creates murals for companies.” Keep in mind that every sidewalk drawing is entirely flat!

Phew, that was an easy introduction! Enjoy the pictures, my friends.

The Artist Faces Himself

How did he know how he looks from the side? I bet he asked someone to take his picture in that position. And one little interesting detail - the beer on the left is real, not on the right.

Square Of Slabs Removed From Sidewalk

Someone has to punish him for ruining the public property!

Eiffel Tower Sand-Sculpture

Look closely at the tip of the Tower - there is a couple standing on it. I hate the bench behind them, because it’s ruining the picture.

This drawing was drawn in Paris and used in Gallery HD television series “Concrete Canvas” (Episode 8).

Waterpool with a chick, Redondo Beach, CA

This drawing was also created for an episode of “Concrete Canvas”.

A Coca-Cola Bottle Lying On The Sidewalk

It seems that Julian Beever is a huge fan of brands.

Box Of Chalks

Those must be the chalks he uses for his pavement drawings.

A Dead Fly On The Sidewalk

Pavement Picasso knows how to make his drawings even cooler.

Transformer at Union Square

Transformer comes out from the pavement. Seems a bit astonished.

Holes on San Francisco pavement

Be careful not to fall down here!

Nokia Town?

(Image credits: Roslan Tangah (aka Rasso))

This drawing is in Singapore. Not sure if the title is correct. Again, it shows that he is a fan of brands.

Dies Irae (Day of Wrath)

The day of wrath has begun with this hole on the pavement.

Batman & Robin to the Rescue

It is still hard to believe that it is entirely flat surface.

Water Rafting

The illusion is quite strong here, of course they are just sitting in one place and look quite stupid for the people passing by.

Ants

At first, it is hard to understand what the drawing is all about. But I can cite the author from his website: “Ants : a colony of leaf-cutter ants builds a bridge in Buenos Aires.” Would you have guessed it?

Arctic street conditions

After a hard work a seal came out of the pavement and rewarded Julian Beever with a soft drink.

DHL Boy

A DHL boy delivering a parcel all the way from China - that’s how they do it so fast!

Push the bout out

I think it is the most realistic illusion, seems like a real hole with a water inside.

Politicians Meeting Their End

At last - politicians are meeting their end! But don’t be so happy, its just an illusionary drawing…

It was drawn near The Bank of England and was commissioned by Channel 4’s Midnight Special for the night of the 1997 General Election.

Bottle of Beer

This picture would look best if someone was standing on it’s cork. (I think there is such picture in authors website).

Gold digging

This guy is incredible! (and must be rich too, since he found gold beneath the pavement).

The series were used by White’s Electronics of Inverness in Treasure Hunting magazine.

Taking the plunge

If Julian really took that plunge, that must have hurt his head really bad.

Beneath every street

I believe that every one of us has waited for a bus in a bus-stop at least one time in our lifetimes. And I am pretty sure that 99% of them were absolutely dull and boring. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Look at these interesting bus stops, and if you happen to see one too, don’t forget to take a picture and send it to us.

Bus-Stop in Dubai

Probably the most advanced bus-stop on this list - fully enclosed with air conditioning. It stands near Burj al Arab and Wild Wadi (water theme park).

Classic Car and bus stop in Havana

I like those old massive works like this bus-stop. Taken from cab window : 50’s car with original 1930’s bus-stop behind.

Bus-Stop in Brisbane, Australia

A lounge room made of a bus stop. Looks like some grandma decorated it.

Bus-Stop in Curitiba, Brasil

Such tubes are all over Curitiba, and the only way to get on and off buses is from inside these tubes.

Bus-Stop near Corinth Canal, Greece

Very poor bus-stop in Greece, someone even brought some chairs.

Bus-Stop in Stovring, Denmark

This one looks spacey and cosmic. It stands in Stovring, Denmark.

Bus-Stop in Scottsdale’s, Arizona, USA

It looks pretty neat. This is a new look of Scottsdale’s bus-stops, made of metal.

Bus-Stop in Changzhou, China

The best one, just a sign put in a pile of straw. No wonder why - it stands near a village, and creative villagers must have built it. If you zoom in, you see that it’s a "Coach Station".

Bus-Stop in Yemin Orde, Israel

This one looks like from Flinstones. Only 2 seats

Bus-Stop in Australia, near Indian restaurant

I wonder if all the Bus-stops look like this one in India.

Bus-Stop in Kapan, Armenia

Bus-Stop in Salinas, Puerto Rico

I like it.

Bus-Stop in California, USA

A prize for the best bus-stop design goes to this one. "Created in 2002 by award-winning artist Dennis Oppenheim, the twisting and arching perforated steel structure depicts the metamorphosis of a bus becoming a house. Fans adore its whimsy and its one-of-a-kind appeal."

Bus-Stop in Volgograd, Russia

A heritage from Soviet Era again, looks like a hat to me.

Bus-Stop in Wellington, New Zealand

A childish bus-stop with zoo animals. A good idea how to transform a boring bus-stop into something colorful and interesting.

Bus-Stop in Athens, Ga

Interesting one, made from a school bus?
